Welcome

Thank you for visiting my digital home. Whether through curiosity, referral, random chance or divine intervention, I am honored that you felt that you might find something worthwhile here.   I will try to not disappoint you.

It’s been nearly 30 months since my first thoughts about trying to use words to reconcile the discordant voices in my head.  For years I have had my feet in two different worlds:  one the world of landscape architecture and urban design, and the other in the world of contemporary Christianity.  Those in my work world didn't seem much interested in spiritual things.  Those in my faith community didn't seem too interested in protecting the environment.

The more I thought, the more I studied, and the more I prayed, the more I was convinced that these are not mutually exclusive points of view.  In fact, they are fully compatible, and I contend, both necessary to fulfill the other.

If you agree, let’s begin a relationship.  If you disagree, let’s begin a conversation.  In any case, garden well.      ...Michael

You Don’t Have to Choose Between Loving God and
Loving His Creation.

Before the snake, the apple, and the Ten Commandments, God created a garden, placed humans in it, and told them to take care of it.

“Spiritual environmentalism” did not start out as an oxymoron— it was an invitation. Yet today, many believe God’s original job description for humankind has been replaced by other worthier pursuits. So when did this simple instruction become so controversial? How does one sort through all the mixed messages? Is making the world a healthier place for the next generation really a responsibility—or even possible?

Gardening Eden is a new understanding of how the spiritual dimensions of life can find expression and renewal through caring for our incredible planet. Empowering, simple, and never polemical, Michael Abbaté outlines the Bible’s clear spiritual benefits of caring for creation, exploring new motivations and inspired ideas, and revealing the power of our basic connection to all people and living things through the growing interest in spiritual environmentalism.

Green living is no longer a fad—simple lifestyle solutions are now available to everyone. Gardening Eden shows how this shift transforms not only our world, but our very souls as we’re drawn into deeper harmony with the Creator. This book invites readers to discover the powerful spiritual satisfaction of heeding the call to save our world.

"Michael Abbaté's book Gardening Eden offers a sound, compelling and practical approach to 'Creation Care'.  As people seeking to become better 'gardeners' ourselves, we appreciated Michael's style and approach and wholeheartedly recommend this book!"

Dr. Gene Getz, president, host, author

"This is a book Christians should read!  Though our primary task is to carry out the Great Commission while on this earth, we must not neglect the place God created for us to live."

Rev. Leroy Hedman

"Evangelicals will be well informed and morally challenged to tend the garden without being throttled.  And, progressives will be thrilled to hear the Christian call to care for the earth.  Where was this two decades prior? I give my evangelical and progressive, two green thumbs up!"

Tim Osborn, pastor

"Michael Abbaté's book lifts creation care above the typical debate and gets back to its appropriate starting point - on out knees, in awe of the creator.  As he advocates for worship, he also provides numerous practical, and even easy, tips for caring for creation that has me thinking far beyond ...

From The Foreword

Randy Alcorn Writes,

"Let me just say it: care for the environment is not something that can be comfortably applauded in many Bible-believing church contexts. It is not a popular subject.

I believe this needs to change. We need to be part of cultivating a new biblical peer pressure that is pro-creation. Mike Abbaté’s fine book Gardening Eden can be part of that change."

From The Book

Mike Abbaté Writes,

"Everywhere we go, we see and hear of impending ecological catastrophe. Global climate change, holes in the ozone layer, extinction of species, hurricanes, deforestation, and starvation caused by drought and pollution all compete for our attention. What do we make of this situation? Are our lives impacting, even causing these global issues? Surely we are not responsible for the dodo birds and the woolly mammoths, are we?

Sometimes it’s a matter of our survival to dismiss these distressing headlines. We’re just trying to get through another day. Still, we know there’s more to life than survival."
